Ka`u: A Land of Contrast and Change


Everywhere one looks, there are signs of an active volcano still building and changing the land upon which people have lived for more then 1,500 years. Rugged, dry, and windy, Ka`u is covered with recent lava flows, and is rich in geological and human history. Here in the refuse pile of a fisherman¬Āfs workshop, archeologists find parts of the story of early Polynesians who colonized these islands. Pahala is the sunny village with Hawaii vacation rentals on the edge of Volcanoes National Park. Near Kilauea Volcano, the village rests on the slopes of Mauna Loa Volcano. Pahala is a peaceful, traditional Hawaiian plantation town, surrounded by macadamian and coffee orchards, cattle and horse ranches, forest and mountains.

Na`alehu is the southernmost town in the United States. It is home to a thriving community with a post office, grocery store, hardware, dentist, fully staffed clinic, gas station, and the Punalu`u Bakery. Na`alehu is just sixteen miles from Ka Lae, South Point and is midway between Hilo and Kailua-Kona. Subdivisions from Ka Lae to Pahala include Discovery Harbour, Mark Twain Estates, Green Sand, Colony I at Sea Mountain, along with Na`alehu, Pahala, and Waiohinu.

Discovery Harbour is a subdivision built around a Robert Trent Jones golf course and features county water, county roads, electricity and telephone service to every lot. Lots average 14,000 square feet and all residents have access to the community hall along with a neighborhood watch, volunteer fire department, and active community association with Covenants, Codes, and Restrictions, CCnRs. Mark Twain Estates is a subdivision located next to Discovery Harbour but with remarkable differences: while water and electricity and telephone are available, the roads are private and graded, there is a neighborhood watch but no volunteer fire department nor community association with CCnRs. Lots average 20,000 square feet.

Green Sand Subdivision is located to the north of Mark Twain Estates and lots average 12,000 square feet. Currently, roads are private and graded, most lots have electricity and water to the subdivision is by water catchment system. While there are CCnRs and an association, the restrictions enforced are less stringent than Discovery Harbour.

Colony I at Sea Mountain is composed of 74 condominium units along with a gold course. Many of the units are in rental programs; however, a community area consisting of a pool, hot tub, and outdoor cooking are available for all to use.
